Just days after Potter Jr. High’s JV Girls Basketball team celebrated a championship season, the Potter Braves Soccer Program added two more trophies to the school’s growing legacy of athletic excellence. Both the Junior Varsity and Varsity Soccer teams were crowned league champions, marking a historic achievement for Potter Athletics and capping off an unforgettable year for the school community.
On June 1, both Potter soccer teams traveled to Vista High School to compete in their respective championship matches. The Junior Varsity Braves faced Guajome Park Academy, while the Varsity Braves took on Vista Magnet Middle School.
The JV championship match proved to be a thrilling battle from start to finish. After regulation play ended in a tie, the championship was decided in a dramatic penalty kick shootout. The Braves remained composed under pressure, edging out Guajome Park Academy by a final score of 5-4 in penalties to secure the victory.
The championship marks a historic milestone for the program, as the Potter JV Soccer Team claimed its first league title in school history.
The excitement continued as the Varsity Braves took the field later that day. Potter struck first to take an early 1-0 lead before Vista Magnet responded with a free kick goal to even the score. With the match tied 1-1 late in the second half, Potter’s Mateo T. delivered the defining moment of the season, blasting a shot into the net with just eight minutes remaining to give the Braves a 2-1 advantage.
The Braves’ defense held strong through the final minutes, turning away a late rally from Vista Magnet to secure the championship victory. The title marks Potter Varsity Soccer’s first league championship since 2018.
Principal Dr. Alejandro Gonzalez praised the accomplishments of both teams and the positive impact athletics continue to have on students.
“These championships are a reflection of the hard work, dedication, and perseverance our student-athletes demonstrate every day. We are incredibly proud of both teams for representing Potter Jr. High with excellence, sportsmanship, and heart. Their success on the field mirrors the growth and achievement we are seeing throughout our school community.”
FUESD Superintendent Monika Hazel also congratulated the student-athletes and coaching staff for their remarkable season.
“Our students continue to show what can be accomplished when commitment, teamwork, and determination come together. Winning championships at both the JV and Varsity levels is an incredible achievement, and we are proud of every student, coach, and family who contributed to this success. These victories are another example of the outstanding opportunities and experiences taking place across FUESD.”
The dual championships add to a year filled with academic growth, student leadership achievements, and athletic success across Potter Jr. High. Together, the JV and Varsity soccer teams have left a lasting mark on Potter Athletics and created memories that will be celebrated for years to come.
