Hands-On Harvest: Students Explore Healthy Eating at FUESD Farmers Market Assemblies

Last week, the FUESD Child Nutrition Services Team held a series of dynamic Farmers Market Assemblies at Live Oak Elementary, Fallbrook STEM Academy, Maie Ellis Elementary, and Mary Fay Pendleton. These assemblies provided students with an exciting, hands-on learning experience while highlighting the importance of supporting local farmers, sustainability, and healthy eating habits.

One of the highlights of the events was the opportunity for students to select their own fresh fruits and vegetables to take home. This unique, interactive experience allowed students to engage directly with the produce, reinforcing the importance of incorporating fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables into their daily meals.

In addition to the fun and excitement, students and staff learned about the vital role farmers markets play in communities by connecting consumers with fresh produce, promoting environmental stewardship, and encouraging healthy eating from a young age. The hands-on experience also gave students a deeper understanding of where their food comes from and the benefits of making healthier food choices.

“The hands-on learning experience our students gained from these assemblies is invaluable,” said Seth Trench, Director of Communications. “By actively selecting their own fruits and vegetables, they’re able to better understand the importance of healthy eating, sustainability, and supporting local farmers. I’d also like to extend a big thank you to our dedicated Child Nutrition Services team, whose hard work made these events possible. Their commitment to providing nutritious options for our students truly shines through.”

The enthusiasm shown throughout the assemblies underscored the positive impact of bringing this educational experience directly to school campuses. By fostering connections between students and local agriculture, FUESD is helping to build a foundation of knowledge about nutrition, sustainability, and the importance of supporting local farmers—all while making healthy eating both fun and engaging.
